Holbrook Submarine Exhibition - NSW

Holbrook’s unique link with submarines began during WW1 when the town’s forefathers
believed Germanton was no longer an appropriate name. Lt. Norman Holbrook's name hit world
headlines for the most daring underwater raid in the war. On December 13 1914 Holbrook (Royal Navy)
made a hazardous journey through the Dardanells to torpedo and sink the Turkish battleship Messoudich.
He was the first naval VC winner of WW1 as well as the first submariner to get the medal. Back in
Germanton, Holbrook as the new name for the town was greeted with enthusiasm.

Submariner’s Memorial

A 1/5th-scale model of the WW1 B11 Submarine is located in parkland
near the Submariners Memorial.

A gift of $100,000 from Gundula Holbrook, widow of the late Commander
Norman V Holbrook along with money raised by the locals enabled the Holbrook Shire
to move and display the Royal Australian Navy HMAS Otway in the park.
A real traffic stopper 400KM from the nearest seaport the submarine is about
90 metres from bow to stern.
